"I'm not lovable" - O.K., this will be my definitive viewing of Manchurian Candidate

Last edited Sat Aug 19, 2017, 10:51 PM - Edit history (1)

ON EDIT: "definitive", not "definite".

Well, tongue in cheek, how definitive can anything be with me/Lounge?!1

So, TCM is running Angela LANDSBURY, and I'll say, for me, she's always been CREEPY WEIRD ODD.

Earlier today they did one her with Ethel BARRYMORE, I was more curious about Ethel for historical reasons.

Now Laurence whassiname gave out the "I'm not loveable" line.

Why isn't that one of the classic lines like "I coulda been a contender" and (insert'em here)?!1

Yeah, Laurence, YOUNGER than Angela. But I have trouble relating to '50s/early '60s my prob. UTUSN Aug 2017 #6

And Angela Lansbury is positively chilling as Mrs. Iselin.

BTW, it's Laurence Harvey.

... And '70s/'80s, come to think of it.

Also, with drama/fiction. Like, my superficial take is on Frank. Seeing Frank in what is said to be (one? of) his most fantastic bits - makes me ZOOM to associating Nancy RAYGUN. Like, Frank was a GIGANTIC star back when Nancy was a starlet with a REPUTATION (what Peter LAWFORD said), and she, despite having travelled all that way from starlet to First Lady, all she wanted was to DO after all those years was Frank. So there were all these afternoon assignations with Frank in the White House under strict Do NOT Disturb ORDERS. By that time, with all that water under the bridge and over the dam, what could those two possibly find enticing?!1

But I'm digressing...

Anyway, credit me with knowing to spell "Laurence" vs "Lawrence" and general knowledge, as in, what everybody knows. What I don't appear to know at 70 is what I've FORGOTTEN!1 And glory-Zeus for what I don't know/remember (GOOGLE)!1 But back to the beginning, "I am not lovable" ...

Six of "chilling" - half dozen of "creepy"!1

7. Question about *The Manchurian Candidate*--SPOILER WARNING!

...OK. That first conversation between Sinatra/Marko on the train, and the Janet Leigh character, is downright weird. Is it possible that Marko, too, was brainwashed by the Communists--as a back-up, if Raymond Shaw couldn't be utilized for some reason or another? And that the Janet Leigh character was his "control"? Seen in this light, it certainly adds another dimension to the film...

your observation "certainly adds another dimension".

On my superficial level of things, I don't think "spoiler warning" is needed for a piece this well known. (Sorry, I just can't stop myself!1)

I'll stop now.
