We're selling one and I'd like to know if it is something of a collectors item, since at the time it was considered a collossal dud. We bought this thing used, but is in pretty fine condition since we don't drive it much. IIRC, its mileage is low.
Hey, you car collectors out there...

(2,050 posts)When they first came out the NTSB had to pay a premium to get one for crash tests, you couldn't buy one off the showroom floor because of demand.
Then when that had died down they flooded the market with them, I remember sitting at a light and seeing four of them in front of me, they all had the "Limited edition" blurb on the back door, yeah, limited to all they can sell, you'll notice most of the early models have that on the back door.
In reality it's just a neon with a different body, they did build a turbo model that I would think is worth a little but more but they will never be a collectors item.
Sorry
As for my experience my Father was an antique auto appraiser in his later years, I've been around vintage cars since I was old enough to know what they were, I started helping my Father restore antique cars in 1973 and have two in my garage, growing up we had Austin Healys, Jaguars, Model "A"s, 1/4 midget racers, highboy roadsters, coupes, musclecars, etc, etc, in the driveway.

(5,311 posts)...it's currently in the shop (day 15), supposedly getting fixed...again...for the third time in less than two months, probably the sixth time just this year. All different problems. And that doesn't count the years before this year that I had it fixed, all manner of mechanical failures, computer crashes, transmission issues, on and on and on.
If I could, I would have it towed out to the desert and blown up.
I'm seriously thinking about giving it to some tv or movie production company to blow it up for a scene, if they would promise to give me a dvd of just that scene when they're done.

(11,795 posts)2nd gen. Had to replace the front control arms 3 times, and they knew it was a problem in the first gen. Apparently it was better for the stockholders to let that problem continue into future generations of the car. Well, fuck you Chrysler. That's the last I'll ever buy.

(66,327 posts)But I loved mine. Owned it for nine years. Great for carrying cargo. With the seats out, it was practically cavernous.

(63,909 posts)The Harvard-Yale game (known as The Game) will be played at Yale this year and it'll be one helluva game. Maybe, just maybe, Yale will win....but it'll probably be Harvard

(66,327 posts)The pullout shelf in the cargo area was perfect for them.
There are times when I miss my Cruiser, but nine years was a long time.

(3,268 posts)...If I had a big old barn and a pile of cash I'd buy every one I thought was a bargain and store them for my grandchildren's inheritance. I remember when VW Bugs and Ford Mustangs were selling for $100. Check the prices now...
But at the moment they are undervalued.

(15,265 posts)At the very least if it is in good condition with low mileage you should be able to get the high end of the bluebook value for it.
I bought one early on but it did not have abs brakes and with a PT on roads with ice ot snow abs brakes are a must with a PT. They track like a safe on wheels in panic stops on icy roads without abs.The asthetic of the one i had were "cool" it had the queball shifter etc. I actually got a lot of cool car comments at the gas pump etc..
The car was immaculate with low mileage and i got a great deal when i traded it in

(63,909 posts)which I find pretty amazing. When he was growing there were certainly still a lot of cars with a manual (I have a friend who LIKES her manual transmission). I remember people saying they can maneuvor better than an abs. I think they are full of it because my Nissan Versa handles VERY well and I LOVE that car!

(10,115 posts)could become collectors items? The PT Cruiser at least has a style unto itself that could make people interested in the future. But do people collect Gremlins? But most cars now are cookie cutters and the cars for the masses all look alike.

(20,179 posts)I love mine, but they were definitely a "love it or hate it" car. They were popular in the body mod crowd and their boxy shape allows them to haul a lot more than you would expect.

(20,179 posts)It's a 2006 and I haven't had to do anything other than scheduled maintenance.

(15,220 posts)Or other place like that? They will give an appraisal and at least you get an idea (free of charge) about a realistic price. When I've traded in cars buying something else, I always have taken the trade in to CarMax to get an idea of what the value would be.

(63,909 posts)sure. Thank you for the suggstion.
