I haven't read the books, but I did come across an Oped which gave me information I didn't have before, or didn't realize how important it would be to the story's conclusion. It's what Melisandre has been working for, her entire life. Essentially, delivering a "prince."
Okay, this is what I picked up from the material I read. The prince could be one of three people.
Jon Snow is the obvious choice. But, is he too obvious?
The other option is Dany, herself. If you recall, Missandei corrected an understanding of a term that was thought to identify a male. But she opined that the correct translation was either male or female. Dany has undergone the same trial by fire, so to speak, to fit the bill.
The third person is something that I hadn't even considered. That the Hound himself might be the Prince, because he fit all the expectations.
For those who read the books, any clues that can clarify what we should be looking for?

(11,004 posts)I can see his killing of Cersei forging the Lightbringer sword, allowing him to defeat the Night King.
He IS the Kingslayer, after all.

(46,698 posts)We have a iron forger in Gendry, so maybe he's going to use his trade to create the Lightbringer sword?
But, Jaime does definitely have a role to play. Hoping that he and Tyrion kiss and make up.

(11,004 posts)I don't think that's been touched on in the TV show extensively, but that could be Tyrion or Jaime.
MuseRider
(34,104 posts)I would dearly love that result. I don't see it but I would love it.
I always kinda hoped it would turn out to be Tyrion. I am sure he is a Targaryen. Well, kinda sure anyway, since early on in the books.

(11,004 posts)I'm still hoping for Clegane Bowl next week.
MuseRider
(34,104 posts)I do NOT want a Clegane Bowl. I have been worrying about that since those rumors started. I get such a kick out of the Hound that it will absolutely make me cry a little when that character is gone.

(11,004 posts)Martin made it his business to defy expectations in the narratives - since the series has left his story it has gotten a lot more conventional.
The Hound has to kill the Mountain for his narrative arc. Jaime has to kill Cersei. Littlefinger needs to get his. Théoden needs to free his sister and kill his uncle.
I even think Dani may die, since Jon is now the legitimate heir to the Iron Throne, and she's been a bit burn-ey lately.
IMO Arya, Sansa, Jon, Tyrion and Gendry are all safe. Possibly Jaime. Either Tormund or Brienne. After that it's a toss-up.
And anyone with Valyrian steel is going to kill a white walker.

(11,004 posts)It's not like GRRM doesn't make it difficult himself... Rickon, Dickon... Asha, Osha (and they changed Asha to Yara, which is similar to Arya...)

(855 posts)Remember when Melisandre literally delivered the smoke baby thingie in that cave? Was that season 1? Is that coming back?
I haven't read the books. Just watching the show and that particular scene has never been explained that I'm aware of. I could have missed something though.

(56,828 posts)part of the Azor Ahai prophecy is plunging the sword into your love's heart, so I am not sure who would be the Hound's love?
I see Jaime, Jon or Dany as most likely.
Baitball Blogger
(46,698 posts)Typical woman that I am, I just want to see Azor Ahai, or the prince or princess, to manifest themselves without having to plunge a sword into a lover's heart. Based on Melisandre's words, that person is likely Dany because she was born where there was smoke and salt (Volcanic Dragonstone) and she brought fossilized dragons to life. Also, the red star, or red comet appeared "at the pyre of her husband, Drogo.
Sadly, if she has to plunge the sword into Jon Snow's heart, he has a scar on his chest to let her know where to plunge it.
That scenario would give us the bittersweet ending that you predict.
Here are the critical paragraphs suggesting that the Hound might be the prince:
Born of Fire: We can state with confidence that the man who became Sandor Clegane was born of fire. As a boy, his older brother Gregor pressed Sandors head into an open flame, leaving him both physically and emotionally scarred. The event transformed him into the brutal and bitter creature he is today. The Lord of Light is all about fire, and fire has touched Sandor as intimately as it can without killing him.
Died and Resurrected: When the Hound fell off a cliff while fighting Brienne of Tarth in season 4s The Children, he knew his wounds were fatal. Arya abandoned him to his doom, and we assumed he died offscreen. Then, in season 6, he reappeared in the company of Septon Ray. Ray apparently saved the Hound from death, although how he did so is unknown.
If Sandor does indeed have a messianic destiny, and if you believe that any of the gods on Game of Thrones are real within the world of the story, then it could be argued that the massacre of Septon Ray and his followers was initiated by the Lord of Light. For one thing, it eliminates competition for Sandor by the Faith of the Seven, and it eventually leads to Sandor joining the ranks of the Brotherhood Without Banners, all of whom worship the Lord of Light. In other words, the Lord of Light is channeling Sandor Clegane towards his destiny.
True, that would mean the Lord of Light thinks little of killing a settlement full of innocents to achieve His goals, but its been clear for a while that the Lord isnt a particularly benevolent god just ask Shireen Baratheon.

(11,004 posts)It's speculated that Tyrion is, and that's why he has an affinity for dragons and Tywin hated him, but Cersei is certainly more in tune w/ the Mad King, and apparently the Mad King had a thing for raping Tywin's wife. If Jaime kills Cersei, then he would be the third head of the dragon.
Can you tell I really enjoy these speculations...

(5,491 posts)It could be Jon, but maybe not. I'm thinking the whole "prince that was promised" thing could be a red herring on its own. GRRM likes to troll his readers, and the prince that was promised is a general plot point that GRRM probably told the writers about.
It won't be the most obvious answer, imo.
