I have seen some very imprudent behavior by frogs or toads when they are in the process of fertilizing eggs. For one thing, it is a process that can take a couple of days. The male wraps himself around the female waiting for her to release eggs, and also to keep suitors away from her.
This last time around a hawk tried to swoop down into the tub to take the couple, and waiting suitor, but failed. Today I saw another batch of tadpoles, so I'm guessing that the mating ritual is complete. Except for one thing. There was a frog or toad that was severed in half. Couldn't have been the result of the hawk. So my question, does this copulation process sometimes kill the female?
I just can't imagine what would have cut a frog/toad in half.
