(3,569 posts)The Trishas, Marcia Ball, Paula Nelson, but Carolyn is the most amazing person. Sings like Aretha and Janis on a ten day bender. Amazing guitar player. But she is righteous too. She cares and tells truths and I appreciate that.

(20,170 posts)She's from Houston originally, and started playing in local clubs before she could legally drink. It's been great to see her grow as an artist.

(3,569 posts)At High Sierra in CA. Fell in love then and there. Over the years she has become a friend, and I really appreciate that. Very special person. She and Guy Forsyth are doing a benefit this weekend at Anyone's in Austin. Bunch of memorabilia for auction.

(9,677 posts)The farewell concert by the Bob Wills band was one of the most emotional musical experiences in the history of American music. He was a giant in Western Swing.

(3,051 posts)I actually saw him in concert. Lubbock, I think.
Some LBJ-related person dragged me, reluctantly. Anyway, a Texas Democratic operative of some sort. I loved it.
Had to be 1950s.

(322 posts)like Tommy Duncan and Rusty McDonald to do most of the singing. Leon the steel guitar player sang a bunch of songs too. Bob liked to sing the old blues numbers like 'Sitting on Top of the World' or 'Corina Corina'.
Tommy sang most of the Playboy's well known songs though I think Rusty McDonald sang the big hit 'Faded Love'.

(12,132 posts)But he's from Denmark so I reckon that doesn't count. I think Proscriptor (vocals and drums for Absu) is from Texas.
But I love Willie too. Seeing him in October. SRV put on one of the best shows I've ever seen.

(322 posts)Milton along with Bob Wills helped establish the music genre Western Swing. They were both members of the Light Crust Doughboys before forming their own bands in the early 1930s. Milton Brown died in '36 leaving Wills to be remembered as the King of Western Swing.
IMO the 2 best bands of all time are (1) Milton Brown and his Musical Brownies and (2) Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys.
Brown's band was tight as a drum (rhythm) and loose as a goose (style/attitude) at the same time. He took all kinds of songs, pop, rags, stomps, blues, jazz, swing, hillbilly, cowboy songs and made them all into his own style. Brown's music is a joy and a hoot and is impossible to overpraise.

(27,792 posts)Though he was born in Chicago, his parents moved to Texas while he was still an infant, and he's spent his entire life there.
He founded Utopia Animal Rescue Ranch, (located near Kerrville,Texas), whose mission is to care for stray, abused, and aging animals; more than 1,000 dogs have been saved from animal euthanasia.
