A potential Reynolds American Inc. deal for rival Lorillard Inc. could have the ripple effect of moving Reynolds closer to union representation for its production and maintenance workers.

Although Reynolds workers are not represented by a union, more than 1,000 Lorillard production employees are represented by the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers International Union, chapter 371t.

Union officials declined Monday to comment on how a Reynolds purchase of Lorillard could affect its members.

The companies acknowledged Friday they are in talk for a potential Reynolds purchase of Lorillard that could cost from $18 billion to $32 billion. Although neither company has discussed a timeframe for agreeing to a deal, analysts project an announcement could occur any day.
