Watercolor tutorials?

I googled and looked at a couple of tutes at watercolorpainting.com but i thought I'd ask and see if any of you folks had a favorite place that teaches some watercolor painting. Haven't done any since about 3rd grade lol...very beginner - as in don't even know what brushes or paint or paper to get...

1. Hi, I live in Boston .... I take classes at Wellesley. Theirs is only one of six in the

entire country that offer a Certificate in Botanical Art.

I love to draw and watercolor, and i love botanical art. I also follow MINDY LIGHTHIPE on her website http://www.asba-art.org/teacher-directory/mindy-lighthipe and on Facebook.

I got some learnin' to do. I've drawn stuff all my life but never got into painting until my wife and I took one day Bob Ross style paint class at a Hobby Lobby and I had enough fun that I want to keep trying painting. I've seen some beautiful water colors and I'm fascinated by the technique...

7. I bought a set of watercolor pencils

but they are still in the box - lol - I don't get a lot of free time to paint and I have no good place to do it at the moment (when I draw it's just on a pad in my lap as I watch TV at night)....My wife and I went to the gulf coast (FL) for our anniversary last week and I took a picture out the window of the restaurant we were at - the window looked out over the bay at sunset - and I'm gonna try painting that picture for her - or at least using that photo as a guide for my painting...sometimes I'm too ambitious though lol...but the watercolor pencil set came with a pad of several sheets of paper so I can screw it up several times as I learn and before I have to go buy new paper.

Here is the pic I took with my phone - I will try to clean it up for the painting (get rid of the hummus maybe, etc...lol)


and I will probably try to combine the better parts of this pic too (lose the transformer and such)


the first one they still had the sunscreen pulled down but then they lifted it so I snapped another pic before it got too dark...and I'll make stuff up too...that's the beauty of art - no law says I gotta reproduce the photo exactly...

2. no but i can tell you

that water color crayons and water color pencils are some of the coolest art materials ever.

I don't know if I even knew there was such a thing lol - I think I've heard the name but I never saw any in use.


I'll look for them my next trip to Hobby Lobby.

9. Tip

Always start with lighter colours then gradually add/blend the darker colours (works every time)
