(23,738 posts)We used to do a lot of Cars songs. Ric Ocasek is a baritone, so it's not that hard to sing them, lol.

Because I have zero range.

(64,427 posts)In both of my last 2 bands, starting in 1981 to about 2005. Over that time, we probably covered a dozen of their tunes. I never played on Candy-O, though. Since i was keyboard and guitar, i played both on some of their tunes.
Two other Cars Notes:
1) Ben Orr sang at least half the songs, including this one. This is not Ocasek. And Orr, did have range, but unlike most guys who can hit high notes, he did not go flat on the low notes. He was a REALLY good singer.
2) I have always felt that Elliot Easton was the most underrated guitar player from a famous act that even played in rock. Super skilled, every trick in the book, precise and accurate, great tones, and could play solos one could sing. Think about the solo on "Just What I Needed". Anybody can sing that solo. In fact, there is so much to learn that i made nearly every guitar student i ever had learn that solo note for note.

(23,738 posts)I was a drummer during those years, so I didn't pay as much attention to the vocals. I can't even remember many of the lyrics to the songs we covered, lol.
Agree about Eliot Easton -- I loved everything about playing 'Just What I Needed'. I'd also say that David Robinson's drumming was fairly innovative for late 70's/early 80's 'new wave'. I liked how he accented the up beats sometimes -- always seemed mildly 'unexpected', lol.

Hawkes wasn't a virtuoso, but he had good ideas and created nice textures.
