1. Kind of Blue ... two perfect days of modal bliss.

March 2nd and April 22nd 1959 Davis, Evans, Coltrane, Adderly, Chambers, Cobb (Wynton Kelly on Freddie). They made something that changed the musical landscape. Not many artists get to make that statement let alone it be true.

I love All Blues but Flamenco Sketches will always be my go to.

Oh my God what I wouldn't give to be in the same room with you, to either play that piece for you or perform it myself. Blue in Green too.

Oh man. I am so jealous that you are going to hear this for the first time. I remember it being played for me by a classmate during my undergrad. Later during Jazz Studies the professor spent a fair amount of time going over the structure and style of modal jazz and kind of blue in particular. He worshipped Bell Evans and I totally get why . Please tell me what you think.

You should read a little bit of the history of this album because it's treasure. A lot of jazzophiles are a little snobby when it comes to this album because it's extremely popular... you know.. "too popular to be cool" its nonsense of course but this attitude isnt uncommon. Kind of Blue is quite approachable even for jazz novices but that doesnt make it any less great. It is truly transformative. It's not my favorite jazz album but it's definitely up there inthe top five.

Also from a racial perspective it was pretty unheard of at the time for a white performer and black performer to work together. Miles Davis & Bill Evans created something amazing here and they both respected each other tremendously. Davis is listed as writing Flamenco sketches and blue and green but it is accepted that Evan's heavily influenced these pieces if not wrote them directly. His style and sound is undeniable. The marriage between Evans and Davis was perfection. When Davis comes in with his horn and Harmon mute. There is nothing like it in my opinion.

Kind of Blue is one of those albums that demans playing late at night. I feel like it adds to the experience. Whenever I have to drive late at night somewhere it is one of those go to albums that I always play. I will be picking up my parents on Friday around midnight at the airport and I had already set aside this CD well before this thread started. People talk about Road music but this is my late night road music.

God I am so jealous of you right now I really hope you love it

gift you have offered will indubitably make up for the day I had. 🤗

I may PM you re: Coltrane.

Us dudettes and dudes are from the era of those like Brubeck. You don't mind? 😉

Gotta purchase a rolling cart of drawers on Amazon in a bit. Should I indulge in a disc of your recommendation? A specific one?

💚

Coltrane is great, Giant Steps, Blue Train. If you liked Kind Of Blue then the gentle side of Coltrane is great. Lush Life with Johnny Hartman is the best version. My one and only love is great too. Sting didn't decent version of that for Leaving Las Vegas.

As for other albums it's going to depend on what you want to hear. There are great YouTube playlists. The Amazon Prime show Bosch features a lot of jazz and that would be a good place for you to check out some tunes.

I first heard this one in college and had completely forgotten about it until it was played on Bosch.

Bill Evans' one note entry just breaks my heart. Have you checked out his Peace Piece? I've never been able to find out how Peace Piece became Flamenco Sketches on Kind of Blue, except Miles Davis just liked it.
