I switched from the standard method of piano instruction to playing jazz because I listened to an album of my dad's (Charlie Parker Live).
I heard Monk and knew, at 10, that this was the kind of piano I wanted to play.
In all genres, careful listeners would hear his influence in how I play.
So, it's Monk's bday and he's a huge hero for me; and I share a bday with Coltrane. Synchronicity.
