(3,395 posts)They are amazing, and if you study how they do the things they do, they are even more amazing.
I'm sorry, I don't know how to link to their songs or post videos, Please, please I beg you...look them up.
Three covers I would recommend you watch first are:
1. My Favorite Things, from sound of music,
2 Mister Sandman by The Chordettes, made really popular by "The Andrew Sisters".
3 The cover of "Angry Birds", very well done and really fun to watch.
This duo and their talents are off the charts. The number of instruments they play, the harmony the Nataly Dawn does with computers and dubbing, and the incredible talent of her husband, Jack Conte will amaze and enchant you.
Please, I beg you again, watch this huge underrated and largely unknown talent, please.
Disclaimer, I am no way connected to them, just a huge fan since about 2005.

If you haven't heard it, the entire "Burglar" album is incredible, including an amazing FK instrumental, "Pulpwood."

(48,960 posts)The nice thing about covers, too, is that you might always find a newer one you also love.
Which is why, when I posted an OP here the other day with T.Rex's '70s hit "20th Century Boy," I included the cover by Bowie and Placebo at the Brit Awards nearly 30 years later, for anyone who'd missed it.

(13,186 posts)That I don't really think of it as a cover anymore...
Turns out that The Allman Brothers were covering a cover of Statesboro Blues.
Duane fell in love with slide while learning Taj Mahal's version of this song

The Polack MSgt
(13,186 posts)Taj's first album and while recovering from a bad flu used a Coricidin bottle as the slide so he could get the Statesboro Blues guitar parts down pat
Of course, once he brought the song to the rest of the band it became what it became, an ABB classic

(13,855 posts)and then again in the early 90's. He put on great shows both times. I definitely can hear his influence in the Allman's cover.

(64,989 posts)Somewhere around here I've got a bootleg CD of a tribute concert they did back in the 80s. It's a good 50 minutes long. All Zep.
Really fun. My buddy asked me if he could borrow it, but I haven't found it yet.

The Goo Goo Dolls - Give A Little Bit
Foo Fighters - Baker Street
Bananarama - Venus
The Power Station - Get It On (Bang A Gong)
Mötley Crüe - Smokin In The Boys Room
Twisted Sister - Leader of the Pack
and of course:
Billy Idol - Mony Mony (Live)
The Polack MSgt
(13,186 posts)The Lemonheads' cover of Mrs. Robinson led me to buy 2 Lemonheads' CDs - Not the best money I ever spent, but not a huge issue either
I never heard the Goo Goo Dolls redoing "Give a Little Bit" but it's pretty damn good
Love the Foo Fighters, but always thought that "Bakers Street" sucked... This cover doesn't change my opinion. They play it great tho
Bananarama's cover of "Venus" is still on my personal list of historically significant jams. More than a couple BIG memories I have feature this song as part of the soundtrack
Power Station? I argued at the time that this band should've been named Robert Palmer Perfected
Eff Motely Crew, a note for note remake of 1 hit wonder Brownsville Station's pedestrian hit is Motley Crew's artistic "Highpoint". JFC
Twisted Sisters 50s girl group take is... Well...surprisingly enough not bad at all really. So much better than Pearl Jams's try
Sorry Mony Mony is ruined by all the drunk rednecks I've had to listen to sing along to it
MustLoveBeagles
(11,587 posts)I mostly liked the Motley Crue video mostly because it made me laugh when I was a teen. Ditto with Twisted Sisters cover. I really, really like the Goo Goo Dolls Rush cover. I sometimes have trouble telling it apart from the original before the singing starts. I found more covers that I either like or love.
Cheap Trick covers of Fats Domino and Elvis Presley
Green Day covers John Lennon. Nothing beats the original but I thought this was decent and respectful remake
Phil Collins covers of The Supremes and Cyndi Lauper
Hall & Oats cover of The Everly Brothers
Gloria Estefan covers Vicki Sue Robinson
The Spinners cover The Four Seasons
Kim Wilde covers The Supremes
Eddie Murphy and Smash Mouth cover The Monkees
And finally Chicago covers...Chicago! They did a remake of their own song.
The Polack MSgt
(13,186 posts)Cheap Trick is great. Both covers are approved. Bun E. Carlos and Tom Petersson are such a monster rhythm section. Way under rated
Working Class Hero is a good fit for Greenday's sound and image. This is a really good but not quite great take on a great song
I never heard Phil's version of True Colors. I loved the original, and it's disconcerting to hear Phil sing it TBH. It sounds like he's trying to sing it just like Cindy did. Jury is still out...
I love Hall & Oates too, but this sounds pretty hollow to me, no hook that grabs me - Not bad, John was a respectable lead singer on this, but ehh. I'll call it a B-
The Miami Sound Machine are just a flat-out better band than the studio players hired to play the original. This one beats the original like a drum, and ahem - I love to hear percussion
Because of my age, I heard the Spinners' version probably 1000 times before I even knew it was a cover. The Spinners killed this - I skated to that song throughout my high school years
Kim Wilde's take is a "No" for me. Vanilla Fudges cover was the best cover
Chicago, oh good lord. An 80s pop rock version of your best song... WHY?
I hope Terry Kath's ghost hounds all of them forever

(4,603 posts)The first time I heard O Death, back in high school, it was their cover. I didnt realize it was a traditional song, assumed it was theirs. Now I find that kinda crazy because there is/was a lot of bluegrass played around here and I was exposed to lots of bluegrass and Americana when I was young. Maybe because versions of it differ from artist to artist? Seems like I would have already heard it at some point?
They do a good job putting their distinctive sound on it. That whole album is pretty damn good.
