Teagarden was born in Texas but spent some of his formative years in Oklahoma City, where he would go down to the State Fairgrounds when the Native Americans held powwows. He later incorporated some of those sounds and rhythms into his music (along with other cultural influences).

Later in life, he became friends in LA with a former serviceman and sometime jazz musician named Clyde Jack Browne. They would sometimes jam at Browne's house with his family listening, an audience that included Clyde's son, Jackson.
