Everyone knows the melody from the sixties smash hit Going Up Country by Canned Heat but here's the original

Henry played a wicked set of Quills. Canned Heat's cover didn't try to simulate the quills until they got in the studio where Jim Horn (Wrecking Crew Session player) stepped up and added the extraordinary flute licks. There was no flute at the Woodstock concert

But all of the great music I was listening to in the 70's was direct from the past. Jorma, Dave, Jerry....they all got their foundation from the blues before them.

They recorded an album, their first, but it wasn't released for a decade. Taj Mahal was a whopping 22 years old, Ry Cooder was only seventeen, and still in high school. Together, they hit all the So Cal music scene, absorbing the music. There they saw Brownie McGhee and Sonny Terry.

Fast Forward 57 years: Taj Mahal and Ry Cooder join up in 2022 to do a tribute album to Brownie McGhee and Sonny Terry

My favorite (Note: Joachim, Ry's son and is playing marcas/drum, just like Coyal McMahan. Joachim Cooder is a drummer extraordinaire)
