(58,354 posts)Disco was big then just as I was coming of age.
I discoed at various clubs from Honolulu to the Philippines, etc. and there was a Filipino band which played at Subic Bay Naval Base that could sound like KC and the Band, the Commodores, Earth Wind and Fire or the Bee Gees and if you closed your eyes you would swear it was the original.
I almost got married there.
The corporate war against Disco began about the time when Reagan came to power and we became more nationalistic, I believe there is a societal connection between the two.
My own hypothesis is that corporate interests worked to kill disco because they became alarmed of its' artistic and social inclusivity and that isn't what they wanted.
They wanted a sharply divided society.

(41,131 posts)wild record- trashing event in Chicago in 1979 until a lot later. You could be correct about the social and cultural issues on the right, esp. racism and transphobia so I've read.
Those club experiences overseas sound terrific. In the early 70s in Germany and in NY in the 80s we enjoyed a few special disco visits. The positives of the style were clear to me, the cool, lively music and how energizing and fun it was to experience. Many folks were motivated to get up and dance which is good thing, like in the big.band/swing era. I wore out my Bee Gees Saturday Night Fever album.
Long live Disco!
