Because it's moody and weird and it has MOAR COWBELL:
And of course, the glorious MOAR COWBELL sketch from SNL, when the show still had a clue about funny:

(64,995 posts)Back in the 70s, they'd play this 3 band bill each summer, once on their way west, once on their way back.
Long story, but we had season backstage passes for 4 or 5 years. So, we hung around with all the bands.
BOC were always super friendly & genuinely happy to see us each time. The first time we met them I said "Really cool to meet you, Buck." Without a pause, he says "You can call me Don."
Bloom was super cool, too.
Some other bands from this period: Rare Earth, 3 Dog Night, Rufus, Bloodrock, Black Oak Arkansas, Head East, Cactus, and a few others.

The guitar solo is likely the only one on a hit played completely in locrian & Dorian modes. That's why it has that Middle Eastern feel to it.
That's mostly the flatted 2nds & 6ths, but there are flatted 5ths, too.
And, now my bit of musical nerdiness is complete.
