I understand that there are plenty of people my age and shade that hate Hip Hop. But the ignorant dismissal of a whole genre is not a good look.
Except for Opera, yah, dismiss Opera if you want, I won't care.
The early rap tunes were just dance tracks with a DJ Yes Ya'll-ing and dropping simple rhymes but pretty soon, the lyrical content expanded and simplistic "my Name is" bullshit didn't fly. One of the early pioneers lead a group called Boogie Down Productions - an MC named KRS-ONE
I've posted about Public Enemy before but just as hard edged was another NYC Rapper named Mob Deep
Who would work with Mos Def
Who formed a Rap super group called Blackstar
&index=1&list=RDEMb4XFG5ahHJ8egqKaOC0vQg
Working with and MC named Talib Kweli
And out west there was Dr. DRE Snoop 2Pac Too Short, NWA and others, but I always had a soft spot for the MC with the worst haircut in Hip-hop History Xzibt

(13,186 posts)But Kanye has had really strong tracks in the past and College Dropout in particular was a fantastic album.
He's an idiot politically and even became his own punchline when he "left us for a white girl" so to speak, but I have to defend him just a little.
If only for the stunned look on Mike Myers' face when he told the truth on TV

(1,483 posts)Just can't hear the n word in any context. I can listen to Mos Def "Mr. Nigga" and appreciate it completely. But it's pretty painful, not something to take a bath and "unwind with a glass of wine after work" to.
If they are listening to stuff like "Willie Sings the Classics" or something similarly nerve-soothing, I'd direct them in an Erykah Badu/Lauren Hill/India Aerie direction and from there Frank Ocean.

(13,186 posts)There will be Opera performed in the 23rd century if any humans make it that far...
But I can't abide with it

(10,173 posts)Which lyric to choose .. he just mashed things up: and this is FREESTYLE.
"My journalistic range is a catalyst for change"
"Brain matter, contains too much data. I tell a story like fingerprints and blood splatter."

(10,173 posts)A thug will mugs for drugs/
he eventually bugs
Looking for crack on carpets and rugs
The squealers tells /but the dealer still sells
Little spoiled kids/inheriting oil wells
I was the type/ on the opposite side of smoking the pipe
...in a beef I got hype
Cause rags to riches/switches men to witches
Become stitches/ body bags in ditches
Bloodshed/ I painted the town red
People fled/ as I put a dread's head to bed that means dead,
in other words deceased
Face got erased/ bullets got released
Bombs were planted and kids were kidnapped..
in fact this was a way to get back at ...
enemies who tried to clock G's on my block,
.. now they forever knock Z's
Plans of rampages went for ages
Some got knocked and locked inside cages
Some bit the dust for crumbs and crusts
In God we trust/ now rots to rust
Bust caps to cops/ policeman drops
You blew off his top when the pistol went pop
Troopers, soldiers, rolling like boulders
Eyes of hate and their hearts get colder
Some young male put in jail
His lawyer so good his bail is on sale
Looking at the hourglass/ how long can this power last
Longer than my song but he already fell
He likes to eat hearty, party
Be like John Gotti,
and drive a Maserati
Rough in the ghetto, but in jail he's Jello
Mellow, yellow fellow, tell or hell, hello
One court date can turn an outlaw to an inmate
But just stay, ship him upstate by the Great Lakes
And than a-wait and wait and wait
Until he breaks, that's all it takes
So he fakes to be a man, but he can't stand
On his own two feet because now he's in a new land
Rules are different and so is life
When you think with a shank, talk with a knife
"Follow procedures, the crowd couldn't wait to see this
Nobody been this long awaited since Jesus
Who wouldn't believe this, I heard the word on the street is
I'm still one of the deepest on the mic since Adidas
They said I changed the times from the rhymes that I thought of
So I made some more to put the New World in Order
with Mathematics, put your status above the average
And help you rappers, make paragraphs with graphics
Cause new days is dawning, new ways of performing
Brainstorming, I write and watch the night turn to morning
On and on and, I got the whole world responding
Rock, I keep it hot and blow the spot without warning
The Emperor, well known for, inventing a sentence
full of adventure, turning up the temperature
Rush with adrenaline, how long has it been again
to be in the state of mind that Rakim is in?"
"Casualties of war; as I approach the barricade
Where's the enemy? Who do I invade?
Bullets of Teflon bulletproof vest rip
Tear ya outta ya frame with a bag full of clips
Cause I got a family that waits for my return
To get back home is my main concern
I'ma get back to New York in one piece
but I'm bent in the sand that is hot as the city streets
Sky lights up like fireworks blind me
Bullets, whistlin over my head remind me...
President Bush said attack
Flashback to Nam, I might not make it back
Missile hits the area, screams wake me up
from a war of dreams, heat up the M-16
Basic training, trained for torture
Take no prisoners, and I just caught ya
Addicted to murder, send more bodybags
They can't identify em, leave the nametags
I get a rush when I see blood, dead bodies on the floor"
... and Wu Tang ( only gangsta rap I can stand)
"I smoke on the mic like smoking Joe Frazier
The hell raiser, raising hell with the flavor
Terrorize the jam like troops in Pakistan
Swinging through your town like your neighborhood Spiderman
So uhh, tic toc and keep ticking
While I get you flipping off the shit I'm kicking
The Lone Ranger, code red, danger!
Deep in the dark with the art to rip charts apart
The vandal, too hot to handle
you battle, you're saying Goodbye like Tevin Campbell
Roughneck, Inspector Deck's on the set
The rebel, I make more noise than heavy metal"
Queen Latifah, De La Soul, etc etc.
The Polack MSgt
(13,186 posts)Problem is - I was trying to keep the OP short-ish and kept thinking of more and more songs and artists that needed to make the short list...
I wanted to include Queen Latifah like 10 seconds after I clicked the post button. Mainly because of the opening line when she starts rapping in U.N.I.T.Y.
That line still gets the heart pumping and my hands up in the air.
I kinda regret including Xzibit so I could make fun of his hair and chose a youtube clip without a video so no one gets the joke.
Which Roots song would I have picked? holy hell they have so many classics, buuuuttt probably "Criminal " from Rising Down if I could only get one. Such an amazing song
