This entire concert is amazing ... basically just picking one fave performance from the show, but it's all worth watching. The version of Cover Me Up in this show is f***ing JAW-DROPPING, for example.
Anyways, I know the song's a bit on the sad side, but the performance (and sound) is so freaking good, it doesn't feel depressing (IMHO) ... just a profound song about letting go of a defective parent, and moving on with your life.
And if the time marker doesn't work, here's the same song at another performance from 2016, this one works for sure ...

Just a devastatingly beautiful and profound ... sad as fuck song ... lol ...
Maybe I'll record a Mr. L. cover of it today and share it ... kinda feeling that way ATM ...

(16,858 posts)He wrote the song for his father. Jason wrote it not long after joining DBT. He was about to head out on tour with them and his dad was worried about him because Jason was only like 21 and he was going out on tour with guys in their mid-thirties. So Jason wrote it for his dad as a sort of "Its ok dad". It's always been one of my favorite songs and I love hearing Jason perform it in concert.

(33,643 posts)I know every word by heart ... Jason is just ... stupid good, man.
On edit: Always loved the ambiguity of 'don't give it away' line ... is it just another good piece of fatherly advice, meant to stand on its own? Which makes sense ... "Don't give it away" ... is standard 'advice' ... OR ... is it continuation of the line before, about being 'Bigger Than Jesus' (great Beatles reference, of course) ... and telling him to not 'let on' how great he is? Not entirely sure it's intentional, but if it was ... that's seriously brilliant. And Jason has done enough since to make me think ... it could very well have been.
