or do you use your phone?
I have a Canon Powershot SX70. It has a super zoom. Maybe not as versatile as a body and lens set up, but easier for travel.
The good thing about it is it has manual controls and an eye viewer as well as a screen.
I will upgrade to the SX80 if it ever comes out (it is a couple of years late)

(2,440 posts)most of my astro work is done with an old sony a6000 mirrorless. its main advatage is its lightweight and lighter is better when attached to the mount i use for start tracking
I have a sony a7iii. i wanted a full frame and at the time sony seemed the top choice so i got the a7ii. i had to replace it and the a7ii is its replacement
i have a nikon d500. its several years old and nearing the end of its expected life. the shutter is rated for 150k shots and im pushing up near that amount.
i have a nikon d850. bought as a replacement for the expected demise of the d500.
My next camera will be a nikon mirrorless. ive considered selling my sony equipment if/when nikon comes out with something in between the z9 and the z7. id love the z9 but 6k for a camera isnt happening

Amazingly sharp lens. Very compact, lightweight camera. Water/dust resistant sealed. The larger sensor gets nice shallow DOF when wanted, great dynamic range and image quality. Surprised at how good the bokeh is.
Great camera for landscapes, closeups, and intermediate (< 10 ft) distance stuff.
No telephoto.
Picked up a refurb unit for about $800.

(6,019 posts)It has a pretty decent wide angle, and an amazing zoom reach without too much image quality sacrifice - great for concerts and other high-zoom situations. I found it much more useful than the PowerShot G5 I used to own, with comparable IQ. I imagine the SX70 is pretty close to the 720.
And when I don't have that, it's the iPhone 12 Pro - not bad for a phone cam.

(1,623 posts)Its pretty good. We also have. point and shoot Nikon, and then our iPhones as well.
Need a longer lense though. But have been procrastinating until I land one big contract or five.

(9,853 posts)...what size lens do you want or need? nikon makes a great 70-300 zoom that is sharp as a tack.....i think it's about $600 new. they make 3 or 4 different 70-300 zooms and the others are even cheaper but pale in comparison. this is the really good one:

(47,415 posts)I have the Nikon 55-300 lens, but I don't get out a lot these days to use it. One of the best lens I've used is the Tokina at-X 100mm. It is great for macros and portraits.
Lately, it feels like cameras are becoming obsolete as more and more people rely solely on their smartphones. A Sony executive claims that DSLR cameras will be obsolete and replaced by smartphones by 2024. I can't imagine that. It just doesn't feel like photography to me.

(1,407 posts)I'm currently using a Sony A77 and my lens collection is mostly old Minolta lenses.
I started with a Sony A330 due to the Minolta collection. I had an old Minolta film camera with a few good lenses (including the "beercan" 70-210mm). So, when I went looking for a digital camera and realized the Minolta lenses were fully compatible with the Alpha series, my choice was made. Over the years, I bought a ton of secondhand Minolta lenses for pretty cheap (almost all were under $100 CAD). I wish they had an adapter that for the old lenses that works for more than 2 of the mirrorless cameras, though.

(9,778 posts)Since the Nikkormat and 55mm "do everything" lens. I still use the lens and its siblings.
The film camera is a Hasselblad 500C/M of the same vintage. (and a couple of 4x5 view cameras that I bought when the bodies and lenses cost less than a new iPhone, for the Ansel Adams in me)
I have been using a Coolpix of one sort or another for years. You can't beat the versatility of a "one lens" camera with an effective range of 24-1000mm (latest is 3000mm). As usual for Nikons, the macro setting works great.
Finally upgraded to a Z5, the low-speed and inexpensive full frame model in the Z line. All the old (50 year old) F-mount lenses work, though the new Z lenses are insanely sharp, even wide-open. Nikon mercifully makes a bunch of slow (f/4 or so) lenses at more affordable prices than the fast ones.
P.S. I use an iPhone8 and some of my best photos are from it, also a Lumix 8X pocket cam "always". Phones don't have useful optical zoom.
The ancient Coolpix P510 still delivers.
It is so old I have to glue the rubber grip pads back on it.
More posts later. This is reduced.
I am so old.
HOW OLD ARE YOU?
I am so old that bokeh didn't even exist. It was called throwing the background out of focus.
Cheers, everyone

(36,281 posts)I use a D500 and a D7200. I also have a Coolpix 995 that's more of a curiosity these days than a useful camera, but I do use it occasionally.

This is sufficing since I'm not doing anything serious photo wise. I would like to get a longer lens but I would want it faster than f4 and unless I can find one used they tend to be pricey. I really liked my tamron 70-200 f2.8. With that and the motordrive my little FM2 clocked in on the other side of 5 pounds.
My Samsung phone. Good within it's limits. Poor in low light.
Haven't brought to Germany the other 2 cameras.
Nikon FM2 that has seen much abuse but still keeps clicking, one shutter lube and adjustment. Many years with a motor drive attached.
Zone VI 4x5 Not sure what I will do with it and it's lenses.
I had 2 other cameras that went to the photo department of a local JC before leaving for Germany.
