Need advice on a good first video camera for a student

putting together a portfolio for a college admission.

I want either a low end professional camera, or a high end beginners camera - the only requirements I know of are that it shoots a minimum 24p, & has manual focus.

This is for my son, all advice is appreciated!

The kits are paired with the 18-55 3.5-5.6 IS lens and a 75-300 4.5 (non IS model) can be had for under $200 to round out the $1K ballpark...
