Rules for both Monthly & Seasonal Photo Contest.

This discussion thread was locked by CC (a host of the Photography group).

Need comments and ideas or does it look OK.

MONTHLY CONTEST:

Only one entry per person. You need to post your entry in the submission thread started by the Host of a contest. Please be sure to include a "Title" for your photograph in the Subject line of your post. The submission thread is for photo entries only, no comments, no questions. The Host will start a separate thread just for comments and questions.

Once a photo is entered in a contest it is ineligible for any future contest unless the Host specifies otherwise.

The Host of the contest is the one that comes up with the Theme of their contest. They can just decide on a theme or may ask for suggestions and then run a poll to pick one of them. Either way the Theme will always be at the discretion of the person hosting the contest.

The Host also has the option of adding other rules to the contest they are hosting. An example would be no Black & White or all Black & White entries.

The Host has the option of declaring the submissions being blind (no one knows who entered which photo) or public. Should the Host op for blind submissions it is their responsibility to instruct entrants on how to get their entries to the host.

Please keep your entry no larger than 1024 pixels in its longest dimension and under 675K in file size. If you need help posting a photograph or with image sizing, just ask.

The Host is the final authority in their contests.

Submissions will be limited to 30 entries maximum unless the Photography Group votes to change the limits.

The winner of the contest agrees to host the next month's contest (or recruit someone else to host the contest), and pick the next month's theme. The host of the monthly contest cannot enter the contest they are hosting.

The Submission & Comment threads will be posted in the Photography Group. The Preliminary polls and Final Contest poll will be posted in GD per Skinner’s permission.

The Host of the Contest may copy and paste these rules into their submission thread or post a link to these rules into the submission thread. The Host WILL copy and paste the CONTEST LICENSE into the submission thread in its entirety. (At bottom of post)

SEASONAL CONTEST RULES:

There are 4 Seasonal Contest. Each contest is scheduled to run at the end of each season so that those in the far north and far south have a chance to enter. Seasonal does not only mean weather, it includes things like seasonal holidays so be creative. If your winters are tropical or summers cool feel free to show the rest of us how bad (or good) we have it with your local version of the season.

Submissions Dates are

WINTER March 1st

SPRING June 1st

SUMMER September 1st

FALL December 1st

The winner of the seasonal contest agrees to host the next seasonal contest or recruit someone else to host the contest.

Only one entry per person. You need to post your entry in the submission thread started by the Host of the contest. Please be sure to include a "Title" for your photograph in the Subject line of your post. The submission thread is for photo entries only, no comments or questions. The Host will start a separate thread just for comments and/or questions.

The Host is allowed to enter the Seasonal Contest.

There will be no extra rules on the Seasonal Contest beyond keeping your entry no larger than 1024 pixels in its longest dimension and under 675K in file size and limit photo editing to a reasonable amount. We would prefer your photo look like a photograph instead of a digital design. If you aren’t sure, ask the group in a separate thread. You’ll get plenty of feedback to specific questions.
If you need help posting a photograph or with image sizing, just ask.

Submissions will be limited to 30 entries maximum unless the Photography Group votes to change the limits.

(At end of this post)

This is for ALL Contests.

CONTEST LICENSE:

An entrant to this contest, by submitting a photograph, is giving permission for that photograph to be copied to Demopedia or to a linked Gallery and included in a DU Calendar that will display the photographs entered for this contest for the purpose of publicizing future contests and/or commemorating current and past contests. The entrant retains all other rights to the photograph being submitted. Neither Demopedia and/or a linked Gallery may use any photograph submitted for any purpose other than to display the photograph being submitted by the entrant, and neither gains any real or implied ownership rights to the photograph.

Thank you bunches to the wonderful people in the best place on the internet.

sure but it did exist at one time. I think we should leave it there in case it comes back or something else like it comes along. One of our greatly missed former photogs also used to host the past winners photos on his site. More important to me now is the calendar because I am seriously thinking of bringing it back either this coming fall or fall 2014 if possible.

how about any rules on HDR or post processing? Or do we leave it up to the host?

It might be a good idea to specificallly state that post processing rules are left up to the host.

I am all for giving the host as much latitude as possible. Traditionally we haven't allowed HDR, but we really haven't enforced it either, so it might be a good idea to have optional wording available for whatever the host chooses? I don't really care all that much but it might make things a little more clear???

20. I unpinned the informal thread I started
Sat Mar 16, 2013, 05:26 PM
Mar 2013

that was a discussion of contests.

Some people did have some good ideas in it about contests and how to run them, so I am going to link it here. It has a few technical ideas in it--how people gather the photos, some links on how to resize, etc. etc.

But we don't need to clutter up this place with unnecessary pinned threads.

Here is a link to the old informal thread, which I never intended on keeping pinned.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/103612422

Hopefully people can more easily be able to research this now, for a new person running a contest.

idea since you left a link here. Waiting to hear if Mira found anything to add. I know I did. Might be best to combine the rules & how to in one post when we have it all together. It will be one long post and still nheed to work on how to resize in Photo Shop tutorial. Need volunteers for the other editing programs tutorials on the easiest way to resize.

23. It might be worth mentioning...
Wed Feb 3, 2016, 02:26 AM
Feb 2016

...that the majority of people viewing any of our images will be using resolutions of 1920x1080 or less. If an entry's vertical dimension exceeds 1080 pixels, the viewer will have to scroll in order to see the whole image. In practice, the vertical dimension would need to be even shorter than this due to the browser frame, to avoid the need for scrolling. I don't mean to suggest that the new rules should be altered in any way; just that this is worth considering when submitting an entry.
