Related: About this forumA fire truck came to our neighborhood.
No fire, just an overdose.
A dog even appeared to watch the fire truck.
I didn't photograph the unfortunate soul.

(14,885 posts)I especially like photo #2 because of all the textures, shadows, lighting, contrasts.
Additionally, I did not know that fluffy dogs were firehouse dogs! Must be something new!

(53,661 posts)A long time ago, an adult dalmatian came and parked itself in my front yard out of the blue, right by the wall of the house under a tree. Large, healthy, as if waiting for something. No one in the neighborhood, including us, had ever seen the dog before. Its quiet presence and demeanor was a mystery.
The dog didn't want to come inside and didn't pay attention to anyone. This went on a few days. Clearly, the dog wasn't going anywhere, just waiting. It didn't move from the spot where it was laying, but we gave it food and water. I say 'it' because I don't remember the gender.
It showed no interest in us at all, so we figured it needed a real home to be happy. In those days, there weren't any known no-kill shelters, and calling the city dogcatcher was death sentence. A childhood memory of seeing dalmatians with fire trucks sprang into our minds, so we called the main city fire department dispatcher and asked if they had lost a dog, perhaps. That was in the seventies, long before 911 was set up.
The fire department put us on a party line with several stations talking at once to relay our question. None of the fire station crews reported to having lost a dog, but we could hear the excitement of the men as they talked. It was decided they would come get the dog and have it live with them at the station house on the far west side of the city.
When the fire truck arrived, the dog simply got up and walked to them without looking back, as if it was the most natural thing in the world to go off with these strangers. I always wondered about that incident, and what we are communicating to each other without words being said in these peaceful and loving moments. But it is no longer a mystery to me how a soul within spotted fur with light blue eyes, knew where it belonged.
I saw deep in the eyes of the animals the human soul look out upon me. I saw where it was born deep down under feathers and fur, or condemned for a while to roam four-footed among the brambles I caught the clinging mute glance of the prisoner and swore that I would be faithful.
