Rhyolite camp is our name for an outcropping of volcanic stone above a rolling landscape of Great Basin sage, pinon pine, and sharp walled canyons. It's near Rt. 120 east of Mono Craters and Mono Lake. The view is spectacular, especially at sunset.

Light shining through the smoke haze from the Lee Vining fire had a distinct orange cast.

(36,214 posts)It's one of our favorite camps. My partner and I try to get back there every couple of years. It's like having front row seats on one of the best sunsets ever. Soft desert night (maybe a bit chilly this time). The big bowl of stars.
