The heavens above

Found this old church last night when i went about 90 minutes west of Austin to shoot the milky way

the horizon glow is from the town about 15 miles away

tried a little light painting on the church

This was my original goal, shooting just the milky way from Enchanted Rock State Park.
This is a 30 second exposure at f2.8,ISO 16000 ! using an 11-20mm lens on a nikon d500

Want to come up if we have aurora this year? You'd have to sleep with cats on you, but I can promise good photos!

years ago we looked at moving to alaska. went so far as to go to anchorage in the winter to see if we could take it.
weve been there several times including taking the dalton highway from prudhoe down to fairbanks

Now i live in texas

it was the darkness we couldnt handle not the cold.

In my wifes words--- if you go to alaska to shoot the aurora she comes with. especially if there are cats involved. I had looked into a trip to beetles in winter about 15 years ago or so. Not sure i could handle the cold now, since moving to texas we have become real cold wimps

And yeah, it stays darker longer than it does anyplace on the coast. But the dark is amazing. Cold? Only if you don't remember that layers, layers, layers work. I'm an old skinny witch but can sit out for a long time if the lights are playing.

plus a camera can capture a brighter MW than the naked eye since the eye sees the instantaneous light hitting teh retina and the camera can accumulate the light over time. this is a 30 second exposure from near enchanted rock
