Green Heron!!

Last edited Sun Jun 10, 2012, 11:54 AM - Edit history (1)

In my blog I talk about the lessons learned from this photo. I didn't have a camera card with me and had to spend quite a bit of unnecessary wasted time on learning how to transfer photos from internal memory to the card. Sheesh! This is the week for my doing ridiculously ditsy things like that (not that I don't have my share of similar issues other weeks.)

http://www.fotofilings.blogspot.com/2012/06/lessons-learned-from-green-heron.html

I'm happy with this photo because the light wasn't all that bright. It was the only photo that turned out crisp. I also don't see green herons that much. They seem shy.

Maybe he is shedding some feathers. Male Cardinals look rough until their new red feathers come in.

today I did a first for me. I killed a battery and FILLED a card all in one day. Thankfully I have a second battery on me, and a second card.

I managed to fill a 16 GIG card....

Burst mode... wonderful thing

Now how are you going to have time to go through them all?

Burst mode is my kind of photography--I love action shots, birds, various candids, etc. It's not so important for still life, flowers,
and landscapes.

I have to say that trying to do photography on that tiny internal drive was quite a challenge, especially since I have gotten used to burst mode.

I almost always have an extra battery. I guess the time I went most nuts was when we are in the middle of the river and there were hundreds of migrating pelicans all around. I needed my extra battery, and fortunately had a 16 gig card. But no, I didn't use it all. Even though I do bursts, generally I don't set the burst speed at the highest setting. I have tried that maybe once, and it was torture going through all the photos.

I guess I am in practice.

They had a lot of dancing today... dancing, sports, same damn thing.

You know what was frustrating... and do prepare to laugh. I was press and I had a low end camera, no serious, the D5100 was a low end rig today. There was this gent with a Nikon D4... I am used to AP\ Reuters carrying that... by the way, that is like usual for them, like oh on Tuesday... Ok I got the kid's camera, fine. I still get the shots, so there!

http://www.nikonusa.com/Nikon-Products/Product/Digital-SLR-Cameras/25482/D4.html

He could not get a good shot. He got it because well, it is a GOOD camera, so told him the salesman (no shit sherlock)... so here I am telling him, BURST MODE... you have the fracking gear (which he had no clue how to use)... I am thinking to myself like, wanna trade?

So we, the other guy from Occupy with also a pro rig, teaching this gentleman how to use his rig in the middle of a shoot. I mean he has the camera, he should like automatically get a good shot... so he was told...

Shoot me now.

Oh and the glass... I mean if you are going to spend that much on the body... was what came with MY kit...

I mean it is not bad glass, coming with the kit and all... but LORDLY, he wanted to save some quid on the glass.

And then the lady shooting with his daughter's CANNON pro rig... at one point flash was a good idea... (sun), and I pointed what would bring the onboard flash. Ok, at least she was thankful, and admitted she had no clue how to use the camera. But this guy... I KNOW HOW TO... yup, that is why Aperture Priority and Burst Mode is making zero sense to you... and how many extra batteries did you bring?

One of those cases were LESS of a camera would have been a good thing...

I try not to overbuy and get too hooked into the material aspects of photography, or even the technical aspects. I'm an amateur and I just keep reminding myself of that and that I don't have to buy into the camera and lens comparison thing. This is supposed to be fun, not stressful. I just got a new point and shoot with even longer zoom than I have now (35x vs. 24x). There aren't many settings that are important to me, but I love burst, I love aperture priority, and I love resetting the exposure (usually down). After I get the manual printed on this thing (ugh, it is digital) I will jump to those parts, and learn to shoot movie clips. I'll be ready to go, but other things will come slowly.

I tell this story on myself in the blog. A couple of years ago I learned to take really good moon photos by moving the dial to "M". I thought it meant moon, not manual. I am an "accidental photographer" sometimes.

Zoom, burst, sports mode, aperture priority, movie mode all make me happy. I'm not trying to be a portrait photographer, after all.

You sure have some amazing photos!

And it takes a bunch of pictures in a row--how fast and how many depends on your camera and the settings that you use. Some people might call it other things, eg, continuous shutter, etc. It's great for flying birds or sports or really any action shot.

You have to look for the settings. Believe me, your chances of getting decent pictures are GREATLY enhanced, at least for sports and flying birds.

I would have loved to have known about this when I was surrounded by dolphins. They kept surfacing, I would click, it would be too late....this would have been a much better way of doing it. (Why do you have all those pictures of water?????)

With a big card and an extra battery, you will definitely get photos of surfacing whales or dolphins.

Hubby can push it to ten frames/ second.

I can guarantee you that. Why I carry a second... and storage... well I filled a 16 gig card... (carry a second).

It is best to also use the FASTEST simm card you can afford... mine are class 10

I see the great blues all the time but rarely see green herons, and when I do, generally can't get close enough for a photo. Maybe a couple of times a year I can get a halfway decent photo. This is probably the best photo I have had of a green heron in three years or so.

I love herons. A couple of nights I've seen a black-crowned night heron in my neighborhood.
