(31,464 posts)First of all, thank you!
You mention the light; these pictures were taken maybe five or ten minutes apart. The church is up on the hill behind the barn, facing in the opposite direction. So I got cool backlighting for the first pick, and golden-hour brilliance for the second. Sometimes things just work out!

(31,167 posts)I've spent many, many hours on location scouting and then waiting for ideal light. I'm a professional art director, not photographer. But I know the drill because I almost always tag along for the shoot. Sometimes it's luck, but most of the time it's planning, experience, talent and ... patience.

(31,464 posts)I don't call myself a "photographer," it's just something I've really grown to enjoy. I've sold some pieces at art shows, but nothing professionally.
Chasing the light is an obsession which also began in my AD years, for the now-defunct Casual Corner women's clothing chain. Once we did a shoot in the California dessert, trying to mimic an "outback" look. We shot all day among the red rocks and barren landscape. Then, after wrapping up and heading back to the hotel, we drove across a ridge and hit that perfect 4-5pm afternoon light. I made our driver stop, everyone hurriedly unpacked and we re-dressed the models, and managed to fire off another roll or two before it got dark. One of those final shots wound up being the keeper for the ad campaign, and a couple more used in the catalogs/mailers. I wish I could find it amidst all of my ancient portfolio stuff.
