From the beach...and then some (editing to add a few)

Last edited Fri Oct 5, 2018, 12:20 PM - Edit history (4)

I am at Emerald Isle, NC, which was smacked by Hurricane Florence. Had booked this week from last Saturday, Sept 29th through this coming Saturday October 5th. The agency only let me know on Friday whether the duplex I'd booked was going to be available because of needed repairs, but by then I had arranged doing something else on Monday and decided to come only part of the week. The owner was fortunate in that he had limited damage.

I arrived yesterday afternoon. The devastation and debris left from Florence was shocking. Once I got off I-40 about 60 miles north of Wilmington where Florence came ashore and headed towards the coast, there were piles of stuff at the roadside. Carpets, padding, furniture, cut up trees...you name it. Roofs and siding off houses; signs battered and broken. A real mess. The owner stopped by yesterday afternoon and told me his sister's house in New Bern had 15 feet of water in it!

The town of Emerald Isle is slowly cleaning up. Right in the center of town, a lot of stuff put at the roadside has been cleared. But as you head out towards Atlantic Beach, the trucks haven't cleared all the debris from the side of the road. It's a mess.

The ocean is clear and beautiful. The dunes are gone where I am. Most of the beachfront houses have lost their beach access stairs. The owner of the duplex where I'm staying managed to get his stairs rebuilt so we can get to/from the beach. The wind took the paint right off the side of his house: you can see where it's peeled.

Fu*king intrusive sack of orange $hit just blasted my phone. You can't even go to the damn beach to get away from that disgraceful, incompetent, lying, traitorous con man. Wow.

Anyway, here a few shots of my experience since yesterday.

Wine o' clock yesterday (and now I need to refill my glass)

Sun going down

Clouds light up

No more stairs to the beach...

Or maybe use a ladder?

Portrait of Snowy

Paint peeled off the side of the house by Florence

When I say peeled paint, this is it!

Since I'm only here for a few days, I'm just going to add a few to this thread rather than start a new one.

A little beach mood from the Mason Jar Firefly LIghts add to the sunset last night.

And early morning sun this morning...only minutes apart.

Last full day at the beach today...going home tomorrow.

Another sunrise

Sand ripples...left as the high tide recedes

Shell bed

The peeled paint photo took my breath away! Loved the sunset photos especially, and Snowy looks happy.

Not envious of the destruction, but I've been to Emerald Isle and Atlantic Beach and they are two of my very favorite locations on the coast of NC and SC. Thank you so much for the nostalgia for me. I haven't been back in years, so this reminds me of how gorgeous the water and skies can be. It is the one place where just sitting on a balcony and chilling out any time of day is so restive and centering. You just cannot be upset in a place like that.

Thanks again for posting these.

I have been avoiding the news as much as possible. I can't completely or literally bury my head in the sand, but I sure can enjoy the sand and sea as a balance to the horrible, awful things that are going on in the country.

I get out in nature every single day. It just isn't healthy to absorb too much of all this. I'm as informed as I can possibly be but then it's out of my control. I've already voted.

The years go by so fast and I am more aware than ever of the fact that I need to make it a point to get back to NC for a beach trip. There is nothing like watching the shrimp boats in the early morning hours as the sun comes up.

so it's only about a 3 hour drive for me to Emerald Isle. For the last few years, I've tried to get here in May and/or October. The weather is beautiful--usually--and it's not so crowded. Less expensive, too.

You won't regret making another trip to the beach here.

Now I'm in Michigan. People always ask me which I liked better and I always say, "I loved the geography of NC better, but the people can be "trying" sometimes." I think most Northerners understand what I'm inferring

myself so I know what you mean. Stop offs in Missouri and Nebraska before moving to Chapel Hill in 2000.

I love the beaches in NC. You can walk for miles. No high rise hotels on Emerald Isle. It's a marvelous place for vacation but I couldn't live there year round.
