I am strongly rooted in the old beliefs, and tonight the veil between the worlds is at its thinnest. I want anyone who might choose to visit to know they are welcome.

(149,580 posts)1. That is a lovely tradition, my dear Siwsan!
I have a good friend who feels as you do, and I admire her beliefs. As I do yours!
It's a lovely photo.

(60,071 posts)2. Every year I carve a turnip, but this year I ate it.
https://makezine.com/2010/10/18/how-to_carve_a_turnip-o-lanter/ Google turnip jack o lanterns then check out the images. I find them scarier than any pumpkin jack o lantern.
Turnip and bacon smash was the dish I made from the turnip.
An example of one of the spookiest turnip jack o lanterns.

(26,257 posts)3. I use turnip in Shepard's Pie and, of course, with Haggis
Now I think I might have to try it mashed with bacon!
And the carved turnip DEFINITELY has far more scare factor than almost any carved pumpkin.

It was good but a bit too rich for me.
The turnip JoL looks more primitive.
