(2,839 posts)But, then it made me feel anger in 2 ways.
1) This poor girl was the victim of Nazi filth yet, she had the presence of mind and guts to remind that piece of shit that he and his fellow monsters were going to pay dearly for their actions.
2) 17 years old and had more bravery and dignity than our present-day so-called patriotic manly men that on many occasions were caught whining about having to wear a mask during a pandemic could ever dream of. Or that they were experiencing tyranny because they couldn't go out and get a haircut or go to a bar to get drunk.
There should be a monument honoring that 17 year old girl, Lepa Radic, and her family.

(9,895 posts)So much suffering, so much pain, so much death flowed from the decisions, egos and desires of those men - the horrors of WWI, the Depression, WWII, Auschwitz, Buchenwald, Shoah, Bataan, Midway, Hiroshima, Nagasaki - ALL of that was wrought on the Earth because of those men and what they did and how much the world has evolved from then to now and how much a portion of humanity longs for that authoritarian system and a return the "divine right of kings".
Never forget.
Never again.

(16,372 posts)So I looked it up and sure enough, Edward VII of England died on May 6. They were all cousins by birth or marriage to one of the children or grandchildren of Queen Victoria. I wonder why Nicolas of Russia wasn't there. He and George V were buddies and looked like identical twins.

(90,645 posts)...the story and photos of epidemics and pandemics would be included in every Science class, every History class, and every English class. With pictures.
How in English classes? Easy: I can think of several novels right off the top of my head that have one or more chapters devoted to devastating diseases we brought under control, and are now in danger of returning. Mark Twain: a beloved child dies of membranous croup. Charles Dickens: take your pick, but smallpox shows up in Bleak House. And on it goes.
If our population was not so effing ignorant, if our population had something to fill their imaginations with besides cat videos, maybe we wouldnt be in this dire situation.

(90,645 posts)I got blocked from my own daughters group after stepping in that. You would have thought I was recommending cannibalism. Who knew?
Among other things I recommended they read Mrs Mike, about a young woman who moves to a Canadian village and marries a local man, maybe a century ago, maybe less. (Iirc, it is based on a true story.) I read it when I was young, and the scene that burned into my heart was of her walking past the graveyard with a slightly older woman with several kids, who gestured to a cluster of small graves and said, Thats my first family. Because, you know, effing childhood diseases swept through every couple of years.
Old graveyards are full of children's graves.
