Taken from a kayak--they are not overly timid around kayaks if you are just sitting there parked by some tall grass. I have a few more of him but I like this one since it's head-on.

When I see a photo of a wood duck, it's usually a side view.

I can see details here that I never noticed before, like the white flecks in the breast area, the details of the bill markings, and the orange "eyeliner." Very cool!

When despair for the world grows in me
and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought
of grief. I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars
waiting with their light. For a time
I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

High praise coming from you! Between the kayak and the zoom lens, some good shots are possible. There are a lot of wood ducks on that river.
