I had a really hard time picking my best images for the "Roadscape" photo contest. Please indulge me and allow me to share some of the other pics I was also considering. (Do NOT tell me if you think I picked wrong).
Please note that these images were not reduced in size for the contest rules. They are all original size.

(149,593 posts)Nope, you sure didn't pick the wrong one. I loved it from the first time I saw it.
The PCH photo at night does give it a run for its money, though!
These are all wonderful: great colors, great composition, great detail, etc!

(19,199 posts)is spectacular.
That said, you made the correct decision choosing the Yellowhead Highway shot for the competition. I'd never be able to keep my eyes on the road.
I've always been partial to the desert southwest for my best photos. Death Valley has some incredible scenery, along with the Valley of Fire.
You did fantastic, Grumpy. What's your choice for next month's competition? Inquiring minds wish to know.

(9,664 posts)The one that speaks to me though is Old Hwy 395. It might be among the least "grabbiest" but I want to be there, like right now.
Filosena Ranch is pretty good too. I don't know why that name sounds so familiar.

(3,160 posts)I actually took this photo near the Filosena Ranch. The ranch may seem familiar because I posted about it earlier this year. I was asked to find and photograph it by one of the descendants of the original homesteaders. There was a terrible gun battle here, and the local sheriff was killed when he came to investigate the next day. He drove down this road in his old tin lizzie. The house looks lopsided because part of it was burned down during the fight. The ranch is located in Mono County, California.
This old abandoned road sits about a hundred yards from the modern highway.

(1,109 posts)Now if you look carefully, you can easily see both Roy Neary (Richard Dreyfuss) and Melinda Dillon (Jullian Guiler) climbing up the face of that most-fine image of 'Devils Tower' (in your shot from Monument Valley)...
"Roy, I don't think I can make it...that's okay, stay close Melinda, and we'll both get to the other side"...

(3,160 posts)However, I have to tell you that Devil's Tower is in Wyoming. This is Mitchell Mesa in Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park, which is in Arizona near where it borders Utah. It does, however, remind one of Devil's Tower.
If you've ever seen a John Ford western you've seen this mesa. The famous Monument Valley Mittens were just off to the left of where I was standing.

(8,890 posts)I shall never again look at roadways the same. I would never have taken photos like this, but now have an appreciation for them. It makes me think back to a tour of AZ one year and how many great photos I missed!
Grumpy Old Guy
(3,160 posts)We do a lot of driving with our travel trailer. That takes us to some beautiful places. Every roadway tells a story, and the leading lines help make the composition interesting. I'm always pulling the rig over to grab a few shots.

(16,377 posts)I'm especially enamored of the first one. I love the way you captured the fine detail in everything from the clouds to the mesa(s) (I can't tell if there's more than one) to the dirt road in the foreground.
TThe one of Mt. Robson with its head in the clouds is stunning, too.

(3,160 posts)The shot of Monument Valley is one of my all time favorites. (I almost entered it in the contest). I get all that incredible detail by using an ultra wide angle lens, which insures that practically everything in the frame will be in focus. The eye is drawn back and forth between the foreground and background, which adds interest.
