As rapidly as Atlantic City was expanding in the 1920s, it turned out the town wasnt big enough for both Nucky Thompson and Jimmy Darmody. In the final minutes of Sundays second-season finale of HBOs Boardwalk Empire, Nucky, the increasingly corrupt politician portrayed by Steve Buscemi, took a fairly conclusive step toward the dark side by executing Jimmy, his one-time apprentice played by Michael Pitt, in retaliation for a failed attempt on Nuckys life earlier in the season. It was a shocking culmination to Jimmys story, whose own dark depths were only just beginning to be filled in, and a turn of events even more surprising given that Mr. Pitt is the second-billed star on the program.

Where does Boardwalk Empire go from here? Terence Winter, the creator and show runner of the period crime-drama, spoke recently to ArtsBeat about the planning and preparation for the final days of Jimmy Darmody, the origins of a disturbing act of incest in the characters past, and which characters may or may not be returning for Season 3. These are excerpts from that conversation.
Q.Viewers are trained by now to expect a big shakeup in a season finale. The status quo seemed to be holding for most of this episode and then, suddenly, it became clear that wasnt your intention.
A.For most of the episode, I was hoping to [annoy] the audience a little bit in having them think, Oh, great, everythings going to be forgiven, and now hes going to take this guy back and everythings fine. And of course its not. But that was all by design, so thats great.
