A federal judge will decide whether Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio and his top aides deliberately disobeyed a 2013 court order to stop racially profiling Latinos.
The hearing, set to begin Tuesday, will be one of the stiffest legal challenges the hard line immigration sheriff has faced.
Judge Murray Snow assigned a federal monitor to oversee the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office in 2013. The same judge will now decide whether Arpaio and his top brass are in contempt of court for ignoring the monitor oversight and judge's orders and whether it rises to the level of a crime.
I think for much of this process Arpaio has tried to wipe his hands of any wrongdoing. So we want to get to the bottom of this and what we expect to show is he knew he was deliberately disobeying this order, said Alessandra Soler, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Arizona, which represents the plaintiffs in the case.

(31,849 posts)But the ant hill thing reminded me ... AZ ants are pretty discerning.
I was walking on campus and saw someone drop an order of In & Out Burger fries. I thought, "Oh Man ... She looked like she was really enjoying those fries."
As I passed the spot where she dropped them, I saw a really bust ant hill about 4 feet away, and thought, "Well, the colony will be fed."
3 days later, the fires were still there.
