Peach-Faced Lovebirds in Phoenix

Last edited Sat Mar 17, 2012, 06:08 PM - Edit history (1)

These birds are everywhere in north central Phoenix now. There was a large stand of Mexican fan palms near my house where about 15-20 of them lived. When the house was getting ready for sale they trimmed all the palms so most of them had relocate. I put up a bird feeder recently to see if I could attract any and so far a couple pairs have shown up. Below is the best pic I have gotten yet, they are looking right at me because I just walked outside (slowly) to take the pic.

What food do you put out for them? Sunflower seeds?
Looking at your picture makes me miss my trips to Arizona.
Places I loved camping and watching/feeding the birds:
Patagonia State Park
Catalina
River Island
Lake Pleasant
Chiricahua
It's cold and wet in the Pacific Northwest right now. How I long for some Arizona warmth!

so I mix the cheap stuff which is mostly millet with a better food like Scotts songbird blend that has a lot of sunflower seeds and bits of corn and fruit.

do you put the stuff in those pantyhose thingies?

I was thinking about getting some of the suet cakes but I will need to keep those away from my beagle, he will eat almost anything, lol.

to keep the larger birds from eating it.

One day I had a pair of peach faced lovebirds on the feeder. Soon after I counted 14 in my yard. They are beautiful and quite noisy!

I have never seen the yellow variety around my neighborhood.

You know what surprised me is that I have what seems like hundreds of pigeons living in a silk oak in my backyard but none of them go anywhere near the feeder or the ground below. Just lots of doves, sparrows, finches and the lovebirds. The doves mostly hang out below the feeder.

I occasionally see pigeons under the feeder, but mostly doves. I also have many hummingbirds that come to my flowers and feeders year round.

We moved to our house in the Biltmore area about 3 years ago and the first week we had irrigation I looked out and saw at least a 1/2 dozen of them on the yard. I started screaming for my wife "there's a flock of parrots in our backyard!!!!"
We've discovered there's a huge population that lives in the area - its not uncommon to see them by the dozen during irrigation.
