Related: About this forumCanvassing in Tucson
I have been inundated with calls from Democratic operatives and Move On and had made a commitment to show up for canvassing today. I hate phoning.
I am so angry about Dr. Ford I didn't show up for the noon or afternoon group but the 9 am group.
I was stunned that there were 40 people there. The object for the day was to sign people up for the mail in ballot. This not only increases the over all turnout but it allows the phone canvassers to eliminate known votes as we get closer to the election until election day we are offering rides etc to get every last person to the poll.
I can't remember the last time I have seen such numbers of volunteers.
Move on Tucson is one of the largest active chapters that they have.
The DSCC field person I have been talking with told me that she thinks that they have place about 50 field people in AZ for the three months until the election. She came in from IL.
Dems always have better GOTV because we rely on a fantastic volunteer base but this is way above anything I have seen before. While I think the polls are mostly correct they may be underestimating Dem turn out by 2-3 percent.
I normally would do about 3 hours but stayed going the whole day even as it hit 104.
Starting out they had 3 Mail in slips and I commented "boy you guys are pessimistic".
After 10 min I got the first one and realized that I didn't have the code sheet to fill in the voter census forms they had and turned in the first one. The organizer handed me a stack of forms.
When I returned late in the afternoon (slightly ridiculous as I was covered in sweat) I had a bunch of forms and their eyes widened as I gave them my stack of forms filled in. I said "we have to go old school, we can't mess around". She said, "Lindsay look at this stack, this guy went olds school". lol
I told them to credit it to Dr. Ford's account.
Anybody interested in joining, pm me and I will give you the organizers number.

(7,349 posts)I was a little alarmed by the number of "strong republicans" I noted.
Sounds promising for you in Arizona!

Everyone I talked with wanted one and was very happy to sign up, so it wasn't door to door canvassing.

(17,250 posts)I am a Tucsonan but living in NYC for a year. Last Thursday I knew I had to call and have my mail in ballot rerouted to NYC. I was hoping I could get that done so I didnt have to fly home to vote. I googled for a number to call and figured Id be on hold a while and bounced around. Imagine my surprise when on the first ring the phone was answered. I explained what I needed I was transferred to another department, again picked up on the first ring and 3 mins later I am all set to get my mail in ballot sent to NY. I believe he said they would be mailed out around the 10th of October.
So glad you are signing folks up! I volunteered once to go to Udall Park and sign people up to vote or mail in. And to think I was proud I got about 6 or 7! You did a great job!
