32 years later, SF family shuns daughter for marrying a black man

http://insidescoopsf.sfgate.com/blog/2015/10/27/daughter-of-tadich-grill-family-says-she-was-shunned-for-marrying-a-black-man/

Terri Upshaw called from Washington, D.C. reluctantly. She knows her story — a Shakespearean tale of romance, a runaway daughter and bitter, unforgiving parents — has the Bay Area buzzing....

Upshaw was disowned by her San Francisco family — the owners of the city’s iconic Tadich Grill — because she fell in love with a black man.

The story broke in the Washington Post. Upshaw, 55, decided to speak out after she found that her family was opening a Tadich Grill in Washington, where she now lives. The announcement took her by surprise....

Her father, Steve Buich, who ran Tadich’s back in the 60s, cut her out of the family the day in 1983 when she told her parents that she’d fallen in love with Raiders offensive lineman Gene Upshaw. And, she announced, she’d decided to follow him to Washington, where he was starting a job as executive director of the NFL Players Association. She was 23 years old.

Gosh, I love the liberal Bay Area!

I went to the link but you have to subscribe. What happened? Did her family still reject her?

The article is very well done, and I especially appreciated the comments. Not one of them thought that what the family did was OK--on the contrary, the family was roundly criticized.

I'm sure that even a liberal haven like San Francisco has its share of racists. What a shame.

Even in the Bay Area, comment sections tend to be filled with racist trolls.

That there is no love for blacks in SF. SF's black population has dropped a lot in the last 20 years. The haight which used to be a mixed neighborhood is now almost entirely white.

The only minority group that has grown in that same time are the hispanics and asians.

The Bayview, the heart of SF's AA community since the Western Addition gentrified ages ago, is itself gentrifying ever since Muni put a Metro light rail line along Third Street. Even Oakland has lost a significant chunk of its AA population in recent years, as people priced out of SF have gentrified large sections of it, and AA people "drove 'til they qualified" out to distant suburbs like Pittsburg, Antioch, and Fairfield.

8. Tadich Grill’s ex-owner: It wasn’t about Gene Upshaw being black

http://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/article/Tadich-Grill-s-ex-owner-It-wasn-t-about-Gene-6596635.php

Wednesday’s column about Steve Buich, one of the former owners of the Tadich Grill, refusing to speak to his daughter, Terri Upshaw, after she formed a relationship with — and later married — Raiders star Gene Upshaw kicked up a firestorm in the city.

Tadich Grill was torched on Yelp, which got so many comments it posted a note saying, “This business recently made waves in the news, which often means that people come to this page to post their reaction. The best place to share your thoughts is on Yelp Talk.”...

However, it should be said that I specifically asked Terri Upshaw if she thought this was about the fact that Gene Upshaw was an older, then-married man when they both moved to Washington. She said it was not. Asked if this was a matter of race, she was emphatic.

“Absolutely,” she said. “The bottom line was that he was black.”

after her husband died the Father has still not met his Upshaw grandchildren. Nope has nothing to do with race at all.
