State of Jefferson supporters plan bill seeking independence from California

http://www.sacbee.com/news/politics-government/capitol-alert/article53355675.html

Now tallying 21 counties among their ranks, supporters of the movement to carve an independent “State of Jefferson” out of Northern California plan to introduce a bill this session seeking sovereignty.

Organizers on Wednesday turned in declarations for 15 counties, including Sutter, Placer, Nevada and El Dorado, asking the state to grant them permission to separate. Six others petitions – which were either passed by the county boards of supervisors or reflect signature-gathering drives – have already been filed.

Jefferson proponents contend that their rural areas lack adequate representation in state government, which has led to over-regulation and environmental policies that decimated their regional economies, particularly the logging and mining industries that historically supported them. Their seal bears an XX, signifying that they have been double-crossed by state government.

At a rally on the steps of the Capitol to celebrate the “declaration day,” Mark Baird, a retired pilot from Siskiyou County who has led the Jefferson movement, called it “systematic persecution” and promised to “start a straight-up fight with the people in that building” to win their independence.

I agree there are problems with our state representation, this is over the top.

Having recently flown over Northern California, there are vast areas which have been logged down to bare ground and have yet to be replanted. Besides, many of the forest up there are national parks which means you are dealing with the national government on that one. Also, mining (including drilling for oil) has and will create many problems with run-off. Open pit mining is an environmental disaster in itself. Dividing California will not open these lands as these people advertise.

This proposal is short term solution with long term ramifications.

On November 27, 1941, a group of young men gained national media attention when, brandishing hunting rifles for dramatic effect, they stopped traffic on U.S. Route 99 south of Yreka, the county seat of Siskiyou County, and handed out copies of a Proclamation of Independence, stating that the state of Jefferson was in "patriotic rebellion against the States of California and Oregon" and would continue to "secede every Thursday until further notice."

World War Two shoved the movement to the back burner, but it has always been cropping up over the years. Of late, I've seen a bunch of 'State Of Jefferson' bumper stickers appearing on vehicles owned by the usual suspects: Libertarian teabaggers.

I'm in Nevada County and it's not going to happen on my watch. The Board of Supervisors in
neighboring Sierra County just voted it down last week.

The morons on our Board of Supervisors (four out of five are Republicans) had voted to put it on our ballot to join the State of Jefferson. After seeing how much manpower and financial aid we got from Calfire and the State of California during the recent fires that burned one third of the acreage in our county they came to their senses and rescinded that vote.
