San Francisco raises tobacco buying age to 21

http://www.sfgate.com/news/article/The-Latest-San-Francisco-raises-tobacco-buying-6864111.php

San Francisco officials unanimously approved an ordinance boosting the legal age to buy tobacco products from 18 to 21.

The ordinance approved by the Board of Supervisors on Tuesday applies to all tobacco products, including e-cigarettes. The city joins New York City and Boston in setting the minimum age at 21.

Supervisor Scott Wiener, chief sponsor of the legislation, said raising the age limit will discourage young people from turning into lifelong smokers.

Opponents argue that California law set the age at 18 and that provision prohibits cities and counties from setting a higher limit.

I'm thinking of opening a 7-Eleven in next-door Daly City.

Dumbest thing ever. Will do nothing to lower smoking rates but will do a lot to see that tax money is gathered in other cities, counties etc. One good thing, the "loosey" market just exploded on Haight Street.

But the reason Big Tobacco wants state-wide legislation is that it's cheaper and easier to buy off a few politicians at a state level than at the hundreds of local levels.

voting and being in combat made sense when there was a draft. No draft these days. The soldiers are all volunteers. And the drinking age is 21 everywhere, even for the soldiers.
