Silicon Valley Ballet which one year ago changed its name from Ballet San Jose√ and recapitalized has ceased operations, ending a 30-year run as the primary Bay Area dance company south of San Francisco.
Following a series of performances at the San Jose Center for the Performing Arrts in February√, 30√ union dancers were let go and the remaining two programs this season, Bodies of Technology and Alice in Wonderland, have been canceled, said Millicent Power, a board member....
All of this comes after the struggling dance company broke even in 2015 for the first time, after a $3.5 million√ emergency capitalization campaign was met. But that funding could not carry the company through 2016, Powers said....
Ballet Silicon Valley was founded in 1986 by Dennis Nahat√ as a unique two-city troupe called San Jose Cleveland Ballet. In 2000, the Cleveland schedule was discontinued and Ballet San Jose earned critical acclaim under the artistic direction of Nahat. But in 2012, Nahat was ousted by his board, a move that was rumored to be engineered by then-board chairman John C. Fry, chairman of Frys Electronics√.
"Ballet Silicon Valley was founded in 1986 by Dennis Nahat√ as a unique two-city troupe called San Jose Cleveland Ballet." I have long thought that it should merge with Oakland's ballet, quite a bit closer to home, as "Bay Area Ballet".
