On Friday Jeff Kositsky, Director of the Department of Homelessness and Supportive Housing (HSH), announced the good news that $2.9 million has been granted to the city of San Francisco to help tackle youth homelessness.
Nationwide, there were 35,686 unaccompanied homeless youths in January 2016, with 89 percent between the ages of 18 and 24. The remaining 11 percent were under 18.
As our sister publication the Examiner reported last December, San Francisco has the highest rate of youth experiencing homelessness in the nation. Last year, there were 1,488 unaccompanied homeless youths counted across the city.
The unaccompanied detail is an important one to notewhile there are a number of homeless children living in shelters or on the streets with their families, its the number of unaccompanied youth on San Franciscos streets that set us apart from other major metropolitan cities.

(1,000 posts)SF has been busy creating an atmosphere that results in homelessness for so many of it's citizens for a long time. Now they are being rewarded for it.
They have changed the once beautiful city of diversity in race, and financial status, to a city welcoming only to the uber rich.
They should tax the rich in SF who are shoving out the poor and use the money to create housing and good paying jobs.
I don't think my tax dollars should resolve the problem they (City of SF government) created.
They need to get control of AirB&B so there are actual apartments to rent that don't cost $2,500 for a 400 foot studio.
They need to stop sweeping the homeless of the streets so the rich don't have to see them.
I hope they use the money wisely, but have no faith. They may just round up all the homeless kids and give them bus tickets to another state. Yeah - that would solve their homeless problem.
