Man accused of hacking into Bay Area media websites is indicted
SAN JOSE — A San Francisco man accused of hacking into local media websites, including the Pleasanton Weekly, Palo Alto Weekly, the Almanac and Mountain View Voice, has been indicted on three federal charges.
Ross M. Colby, 34, was arraigned in U.S. District Federal Court in San Jose on Tuesday following an FBI investigation that charged him with intended damage to a computer, attempted damage, and misdemeanor computer intrusion, according to court documents.
In an indictment unsealed Tuesday, Colby is accused of accessing Embarcadero Media Group’s corporate email accounts in July 2015. On Sept. 17, 2015, the company’s websites were hacked and taken over with an image of Guy Fawkes, most associated with the Anonymous activist group, and a message that read “Unbalanced Journalism for profit at the cost of human right. Brought to you by the Almanac.”
A message said that the site had been hacked because it “failed to remove content that has been harmful to the wellbeing (sic) and safety of others.” The message threatened to permanently shutdown all Embarcadero Media websites if the company failed to honor such requests.
