Man who ran down bicyclists mistakenly released from Sacramento County Jail

A state prison inmate who was mistakenly released from the Sacramento County Jail on Tuesday is being sought by state and local law enforcement authorities.

Alamar Houston, 40, was in Sacramento County Jail so he could attend court proceedings for vehicle theft and receiving stolen property, according to a California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation news release. He was supposed to be returned to state custody after the court proceedings. Instead, when the court case was dismissed, he was mistakenly released by the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department.

A Yolo County jury had already convicted Houston of multiple felonies, including assault with a deadly weapon, hit and run causing injury, vehicle theft and reckless evasion from law enforcement officers. The charges stemmed from a daylong crime spree in 2015, when he drove a stolen vehicle into bicyclists on South River Road near West Sacramento.

He was sentenced in January to 35 years in state prison. He entered the state prison system on Jan. 12 and had been housed at Deuel Vocational Institution in Tracy.

Inmate mistakenly released from Sacramento County Jail, found two days later

A state prison inmate is back in custody after he was mistakenly released from the Sacramento County Jail on Tuesday, according to the California Department of Corrections.

Alamar Houston, 40, was sent out to court in Sacramento County from the Department to face charges of vehicle theft and receiving stolen property last month. He had been housed at Sacramento County Jail while in the custody of local authorities.

The Department had an active detainer on Houston, so that he would be returned to custody after the court proceedings. Instead, on Tuesday after Houston’s court case was dismissed, he was mistakenly released by the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office.

Houston was located in Sacramento late Thursday night and was taken into custody without incident around 12:15 a.m., according to the Department. He was returned to Deuel Vocational Institution in Tracy, where he had been housed until his transfer to Sacramento County Jail.
