The fire started Saturday afternoon around 2:15 p.m. PT and in less than 24 hours grew to cover 16,500 acres of burn with zero containment. There was so much smoke from the fire that a satellite in space was able to pick it up, according to the Sacramento National Weather Service.
As of Sunday morning (July 1, 2018) in California, there were 110 fire engines working to fight the fire along with 29 fire crews, 12 helicopters and more. The conditions for a fire were perfect, and a Red Flag warning was in place, meaning the temperatures were higher, the humidity was low and the winds were blowing, said the Cal Fire website.
There were mandatory evacuations in place for County Road 63 to County Road 76, west of Highway 16 and the Murphy Ranch area, according to Cal Fire. Those displaced by the fire can go to the shelter at Rumsey Grange Hall at 16960 Yolo Ave. in Esparto, off of Highway 16.

(29,699 posts)such a quaint little space on the highway. Lots of family almond groves and fruit and as you can see, grapes. I never wanted to live there because it is such a dry and remote place.

It is terrifying to look out your window and see roaring flames over the next hill. I don't miss that part of CA at all. The last summer we were there we couldn't go outside. The ash was large flakes and the smoke was so thick you couldn't see 30 feet away.

(60,010 posts)One would think that after that massive fire of 2 years ago now, there would not be anything left to burn in the area.
I love where he lives, love the house, the valley, the river, but it is so isolated they don't have reliable power, only satellite internet, so clouds, rain, smoke screws that up.
to evacuate they have to drive miles to the main 2 lane road, which may or may not be blocked.
Pretty dramatic event when one is younger and more mobile. He is 72, not all that mobile now.

I agree that northern California is VERY primitive. That's part of it's charm, but it's tough as you get older.
