The Mendocino Complex fire came to within about two miles from our doorstep. We were evacuated for about ten days. The only problem we have this time is lots of smoke. We are probably looking at a week or two of pretty much staying indoors with the house closed up. Unless another fire starts near here, we should be fine.

due to clearing the underbrush or has it grown back since then? They always tell is to clear our properties and surrounding areas of the dry bushes, etc but when burning embers carried by the strong Santa Anas have been able to jump 12 lanes of a freeway merge in the past in San Diego I am always worried.

60% of the land mass in my county has burned in the last three years, so those areas won't burn again for years, except possibly single structure fires. I still live in a small town with lots of trees, so we will never be 100% safe. The city and county have lately been far more diligent about enforcing ordinances about things like clearing weeds from around structures and on vacant lots, and people are complying, or they are getting fined, then having the government clear things and assess their property.

It is sort of like vaccinating your kids, a fire effects everyone. If one person chooses not to be safe, the people around him are in danger. I guess people are finally realizing they do have to take personal action, if not a big fine should do the trick!

I was a teacher near the Cedar and Witch fires of 2003 and 2007 before they finally closed the schools for a week each time. Even 25 miles away ashes the size of potatoe chips fell at my home. The other teachers laughed at me at first but when they started coughing they changed their tune.

Trees are safe and no fires in these parts near the coast. No smoke in sight either.

Del Norte/Humboldt AOK! Hope it stays that way!

I was in both places last weekend.

To see those places destroyed by fire is just unthinkable to me.

And the shooting in Thousand Oaks is also unthinkable.

You can’t say “never here” anymore.

Staff is now focused on their current crisis: providing a safe shelter for lost and homeless pets while they find their way home.
