Gavin Newsom's first hires suggest the next California governor has big health care plans

Gavin Newsom might not be able to accomplish his ambitious campaign goal of bringing government-funded universal health care to California, but his first hires suggest he’s planning something big.

Incoming chief of staff Ann O’Leary helped develop the Children’s Health Insurance Program when she worked in the Bill Clinton White House.

His cabinet secretary — typically the second-highest-ranking cabinet member — Ana Matosantos helped lead negotiations to expand health insurance access under former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

And several other key appointees in the new administration have spent years advocating to make health care more affordable and expand immigrants’ access to insurance.

look that anything will happen on that front until at least 2020, and will have problems at the federal level just to try to allow people not to be penalized for pre-existing conditions

I got a survey in my email from him and health care wasn't even on his list of issues to focus on! I couldn't believe it. There was an "other" option and I wrote in "affordable health care for the state since that IS what you ran on". I guess I wasn't the only one to write that and remind him about his campaign promises.

He will have plenty of money in the budget, a legislature which will rubber stamp his proposals, and a state population which is watching. California has been blessed since the last Republican idiot governor. The experiment to try republicans is always an explosive failure for California. I think California will do better then other states even if there is another DEPRESSION...I voted for Jerry in the 70's and currently. The USA screwed up when they did not elect him as president, but we did get JIMMY!!!

I'd like to see the state take over all health care insurance and run it non-profit. California can own the hospitals and labs too - they're as crooked as big as the insurance companies. And PG&E.
