SAN DIEGO When Ramona Bingwell saw the Sheriffs Department bus at a recreation center in Encanto on Thursday, she refused to let her granddaughter and niece get on board.
Instead, she drove the 7- and 8-year-old girls to the destination, a day-long surf camp in Del Mar. She also turned to social media to post photos of the bus with barred windows.
Should I be offended...summer camp is taking the inner city kids to the beach today and THIS is their transportation, Bingwell wrote.
By the afternoon, her post had gone viral, prompting concerns about the message sent by putting children of color on inmate-transport buses. The backlash comes as racial relations are fraught across the nation.
