This Berkeley mayor candidate has a controversial history of extreme animal activism
Berkeley residents may have noticed green and white lawn signs popping up in every corner of the city over recent weeks, emblazoned with "For Mayor Wayne Hsiung." In terms of visibility alone, the controversial candidate may be winning the race for mayor.
As the candidate states in his official city ballot statement, Hsiung is "not a traditional politician."
Hsiung is the cofounder of the controversial animal rights organization Direct Action Everywhere (DxE), and is reportedly facing 17 felonies and eight misdemeanor charges in connection with several incidents, including one at pig and turkey farms farm in Utah, a goat rescue in North Carolina, and two poultry farms in Petaluma, Berkeleyside reported.
In recent years, DxE members in Berkeley have taken part in several controversial political stunts.
