(2,173 posts)LA is one of few places in the world that should host the Olympics. It has ample sports facilities to handle large crowds between the numerous professional and collegiate facilities in southern California.
Unlike most other venues that had to build infrastructure for the events from scratch at great cost that was never recovered (see Brazil and Spain) -- the LA area makes sense to host.
In fact, there was a push a few years ago to rotate the summer Olympics between only a few venues (including LA) that already have the infrastructure to handle it. It was unpopular because many countries wanted the opportunity to advertise using the Olympics but the reality is the financial commitment to places without the existing infrastructure will never yield enough money to warrant the invetments. Whether it be the Olympics or the World Cup, the only way to not pile up huge debt is to pick places that already handle huge sporting events on a regular basis like southern California.

(21,802 posts)But, I was at the Atlanta Olympics. The venues were scattered all over the place, many different communities. It certainly looked like business was booming in all those areas, and the citizens seemed glad to have them there (well, except for that guy that bombed the park).
It would be incredibly sad to lose one of the last things that brings people around the world happily together.
