San Diego Model Railroad Museum reopens April 2 in Balboa Park

The San Diego Model Railroad Museum is reopening to the general public Friday, April 2, after being closed since last year due to pandemic restrictions. The reopening coincides with an important milestone. SDMRM has raised over half of its $40,000 goal to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the museum’s first public opening.

SDMRM is located on the lower level of the Casa De Balboa building, next to the Prado Restaurant and across from the lily pond in Balboa Park. Tickets are available at the door, but the museum encourages the public to purchase them on their website first.

Here's a list of other Balboa Park venues preparing to reopen this month.

Reopening Friday, April 2:
• Centro Cultural de la Raza, 3 days/week, Friday through Sunday
• Fleet Science Center, 4 days/week, Friday through Monday
• San Diego Automotive Museum, 6 days/week, closed Monday
• San Diego Natural History Museum, 5 days/week, Friday through Tuesday

Reopening Friday, April 16:
• San Diego History Center, 3 days/week, Friday through Sunday

Reopening Wednesday, April 21:
• Museum of Us, 5 days/week, Wednesday through Sunday

1 mile from the Zoo entrance and Balboa Park. I love to walk the Prado and over the Laurel Street bridge. It has been great this past year as there are no crowds to speak of....but it is nice the museums and shops will start to open again. Looking forward to the Organ Pavilion concerts again.

A walk to and from the Park was an enjoyable outing.
Google tells me it was a 21 minute walk.

Moved away in 2002.

Georgia, south of Robinson. The Georgia St. bridge over University has been restored and rebuilt. It looks so amazing now.

The San Diego Model Railroad Museum is a world-class treasure. It's incredible and a fascinating place to visit for all ages.

Highly, highly recommended.

(see if you can find the shark in someones back yard pool. That's the only clue I will give you....)

That means I must have seen it when it was pretty near brand new.

... when it was just a bunch of old guys playing with trains and reminiscing about the California Pacific International Exposition of 1935-1936.

Who could forget the exposition? It had its own nudist colony!

My wife and I visited the railroad museum several times when our own children were young.

When I was a kid I'd spend a few weeks in San Diego every summer visiting family.
