Oakland restaurant parklet worth thousands destroyed by alleged car crash: 'We're devastated '

Manuel Torres was at a loss of words when he arrived at his Oakland restaurant, Molcajete Cocina Mexicana, and found his former parklet in a state of ruins.

The collapsed structure laid flat just outside his business at 1734 Webster St. along with the parklet’s chairs, tables and TVs that were likewise damaged in the event. Torres, who spoke to SFGATE in Spanish, said that the parklet was destroyed after a car rammed into the structure early Sunday morning.

“We're devastated because it was the bridge that connected our business,” Torres said. “We’re family owned, and we haven’t stopped working for the last three years, seven days a week. Forcefully, we had to close...Sunday and Monday. We reopened Tuesday but our customers prefer to sit outdoors.”

Torres said he found a police report slipped under his business door and that the person responsible for the damage came forth later that morning to express his sincerest apologies and share his insurance information. The encounter was brief, and Torres said that the person did not give additional information regarding the incident.
