Mohegans, Malloy Detail Plans For Old Norwich Hospital Site
Standing in a high-rise hotel suite that offered a sweeping view of a former psychiatric hospital along the Thames River in Preston, officials on Tuesday outlined their vision for a multi-million dollar entertainment complex at the long-abandoned site.
The project, which is being developed by the Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority, is predicted to generate hundreds of construction and permanent jobs and provide an economic boost to the sleepy town of Preston and the rest of Southeastern Connecticut. It would cost between $200 million and $600 million to build, depending the scale.
"There's been a whole lot of years and a whole lot of hard effort that has gone into getting us into this moment that we're at right now," Mohegan Tribal Chairman Kevin Brown said.
The 393-acre brownfield property has been vacant since the state closed the hospital in 1996. The land was sold by the state to Preston in 2009 for $1.
